US against Brazil's former president house arrest

Brazil’s Supreme Court has placed former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest as he faces trial over allegations of plotting a coup — accusations he denies. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the investigation, stated that the move was prompted by Bolsonaro’s failure to comply with court-imposed restrictions issued last month. Bolsonaro’s legal team has rejected claims of violating any court orders and announced plans to appeal the decision, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department issued a statement on X condemning the Brazilian court’s ruling, pledging to hold accountable anyone supporting the sanctioned activities. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has described Bolsonaro’s trial as a “witch-hunt,” using it as justification to impose a 50% tariff on certain Brazilian imports, despite the U.S. maintaining a trade surplus with Brazil. Justice Moraes, who has also been sanctioned by the U.S., accused Bolsonaro of using social media a...

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged a remarkable Sh400 million reward to the Harambee Stars if they win the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), adding to President William Ruto’s earlier promise of Sh600 million. This brings the total potential reward to Sh1 billion—a record-breaking incentive for any Kenyan national team. Speaking after President Ruto’s meeting with the squad on August 2, Sonko clarified that his contribution isn't meant to compete with the President's offer but to complement it as a gesture of support. “The President has made a commendable move, and it will definitely inspire the players,” Sonko said. “I’m not trying to compete with him; I’m just reinforcing his effort. If our team brings the trophy home, I’ll give them Sh400 million. Boys, that’s Sh1 billion waiting for you if you win.” Sonko, known for his extravagant acts of generosity, also reflected on his past rewards to individual players. He admitted that while such incentives enc...
