Office of Registrar of parties sued for failing to register Gen Z party

A city lawyer has filed a lawsuit challenging the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties' decision to allegedly refuse the registration of the Gen Z party. In his application to the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT), James Ogenga seeks a declaration that the Registrar's decision to reject the reservation of the name "Gen Z Party" is discriminatory and unconstitutional. Ogenga's challenge follows the Registrar's refusal of the party name on the grounds that it does not promote inclusivity. "The learned Registrar misdirected herself by not providing the appellant with her interpretation of the name 'The Gen-Z Party' before refusing to reserve it. She only states that the name does not promote inclusivity. The name could have various interpretations, including but not limited to Generation Zote, Generation Zion, General Zod, Gender Z, General Zeus, among others," he argued. Ogenga stated that on June 24, 2024, he applied for the r...

Sifuna now urges ODM secretary nominees to resign before vetting

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has called for the resignation of party members who have been nominated to President Ruto's Cabinet. Speaking on Citizen TV on Thursday, Sifuna stated that the four ODM members had not been recommended by the party for nomination to join Ruto's broad-based government. He emphasized that their nomination does not represent the party's position in Ruto's administration. Sifuna expects these members to submit their resignation letters before heading to Parliament for vetting. "I expect that by the end of the day or before they go for vetting, we will receive resignations from these individuals from their positions in the party. This is my expectation because the law is that they cannot go into Cabinet as members of political parties," Sifuna explained. He affirmed that the four nominees were not presented by Raila Odinga, highlighting that Odinga is a strong advocate for gender equity. Sifuna further noted that ODM is a diverse...

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has withdrawn the summons issued to Embakasi East MP Babu Owino regarding incitement allegations. Babu Owino shared a screenshot of the DCI's communication on his social media, indicating that he was no longer required to present himself. On his X handle, Owino mentioned that he had planned to attend the summons with his legal team, several Members of Parliament, and supporters from across Kenya. "I was to be accompanied by my advocates, MPs, and the people of Kenya, but it appears news of our visit in our thousands prompted them to recall their invitation," Owino stated. He added, "I reiterate that we shall not be intimidated into silence. No matter the price, we are ready to pay it." The initial summons, issued on Tuesday, called for Babu Owino to provide information concerning allegations of incitement and money laundering. According to a letter seen by the Star, the DCI believed Owino possessed information cr...

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene to attend to the injured and manage the situation. A circulating Video of Ruto being heckled in Bomet edited

A circulating video clip on social media, which allegedly shows President William Ruto being heckled in Bomet, has been edited. The clip, shared on X, depicts Ruto atop his vehicle in Bomet town while residents chant "Ruto must go." However, analysis confirms that the footage has been manipulated to add sounds of dissent from recent demonstrations. Although Ruto was in Sotik, Bomet County on Sunday for a church service, he did not stop in Bomet town. He concluded the event at Chebango AGC church and then flew directly to Nairobi, according to officials from his office. The original footage of Ruto was recorded on March 16 this year during his visit to the county to launch several development projects in Chepalungu and Bomet town. In the March 16 event, Ruto wore white trousers, a cap, and a blue and white checked shirt—the same attire seen in the viral video. Among those who shared the manipulated clip is Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot, who commented on the suppo...

Malala Urges Kalonzo to suport Ruto's Unity steps

(UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala has urged Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to reconsider his firm stance and support national unity efforts. Malala highlighted President William Ruto's willingness to collaborate with opposition leaders to foster national unity in the wake of recent protests. "I urge Kalonzo to show patriotism and accept the President's invitation for the opposition to aid in bringing peace," Malala stated. He emphasized that it would be unwise for a leader of Kalonzo's stature to align with those resisting the unity initiative. "It would be very wrong for him to join those who are not after peace in the country," he added. In contrast, Kalonzo announced on Friday, just before Ruto unveiled his cabinet, that Azimio would not join the proposed broad-based government. There were rumors that Ruto might appoint some opposition leaders as Cabinet Secretaries. Kalonzo argued that joining the proposed government of national unity would bet...

Parent finds her daughter amongst the Kware bodies

On June 28, 2024, 24-year-old Roseline Akoth went missing from the Kware area of Pipeline, where she lived with her sister-in-law, Judith Akoth. Having moved to Nairobi just three months earlier in search of a job to support her three children back in Luo Nyanza, Roseline's disappearance threw her family into panic. Despite numerous attempts to contact her, all efforts were in vain. Initially, her phone was answered, but no one spoke; soon after, it went off permanently. Weeks later, the discovery of dead bodies at an abandoned quarry in Kware, Mukuru Slums, led the family to investigate whether Roseline might be among the victims. Her mother, Benta Awuor Ogongo, traveled to Nairobi on Sunday to assist in the identification process. Their worst fears were confirmed on Monday: Roseline was among the brutally murdered victims, though only the upper part of her body was recovered. At the City Mortuary, the family was devastated to identify Roseline. They had to record statements at D...

DCI says Gaicho Macharias arrest is a mistaken identity

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin now admits that the arrest of veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho was a classic case of mistaken identity. Gaitho found himself unexpectedly detained at Karen Police Station on Wednesday morning. "We apologize to Gaitho. It was a case of mistaken identity," Amin explained, noting they were actually looking for another person named Gaitho. Gaitho's daughter confirmed her father's return to Karen Police Station in the same vehicle he was initially taken in. "I'm with my dad @MachariaGaitho. He’s just been brought back to Karen police station by the car that abducted him," Anita Gaitho tweeted. "He’s safe, although they did rough him up a bit. We're filing the abduction report right now." The arrest saga began when Gaitho, accompanied by his son, was intercepted by a Subaru as they left home. Gaitho then drove to Karen Police Station, only to be forcefully bundled into another car. In a video ma...

Demos start off in Nairobi as police fire teargas

Police fired teargas in Nairobi's CBD near Archives, sending crowds into a comical scatter for safety. Amid the chaos, Kenyans were seen desperately trying to wash the teargas from their eyes, with billowing smoke adding a dramatic touch to the scene. Boda bodas were abandoned at their stages, their riders likely off on an impromptu sprint. Despite the teargas welcome, more youths were expected to join the street demonstrations. Police cars patrolled the CBD, while protesters waved Kenyan flags with a mix of determination and a bit of mischief. Some protesters took a more relaxed approach, lounging on the pavements as the crowd slowly gathered for the show. Anyway click here for best offers.

Two more bodies found in Kware

Two more bodies were retrieved Sunday from the Kware dump site in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Nairobi. Chaos ensued as police dispersed a crowd, wounding one person. Another victim, a woman, was also injured. Azimio leader Raila Odinga and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna visited the site as residents protested the killings reported in the area. They urged locals to cooperate with the police. On Sunday, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja called for calm from Kware residents and restraint from the police as body retrieval continued. He highlighted the clashes between residents and officials, which hindered rescue efforts after police used tear gas on the crowd. Sakaja urged the DCI to fully investigate these deaths, emphasizing the need for answers and safety. He assured residents of the county's support for the victims' families and cooperation with the National Police in the investigation. The City Mortuary received eight bodies and twelve body parts from the Kware area. Sakaja mentioned that...

SHIF declared unconstitutional by court

The High Court has ruled the Social Health Insurance Fund unconstitutional. In their judgment, Justices Alfred Mabeya, Robert Limo, and Friday Mugambi granted Parliament 120 days to rectify the Act. The three-judge panel emphasized that Parliament must conduct adequate public participation in accordance with the constitution before re-enacting the Act and amending the unconstitutional provisions. "This must be done within 120 days. If not, the Act will remain suspended," they stated. The court found that the programme had disproportionately burdened a small number of salaried individuals, creating inequality in contributions. Anyway click here for best offers.

Attorney General Justin Muturi has rebutted assertions made by a local newspaper that President William Ruto disregards consulting him, despite his role as the State's principal legal adviser. In a statement issued on Thursday, Muturi categorically dismissed the report attributed to him as inaccurate. "As a former legislator and ex-Speaker of the National Assembly, I uphold the utmost standards of integrity and transparency," he affirmed. "The misrepresentations in the article are misleading to the Kenyan public and undermine these fundamental principles." Muturi emphasized the media's responsibility to uphold accuracy and reliability in their reporting at all times. In his first press conference since their arrival two weeks ago, Otunge expressed confidence that their mission would succeed with the support of local residents. The press briefing coincided with the Haitian National Police (PNH) regaining control of the State University Hospital of Haiti (HUEH), a significant development after weeks of tension. The operation to reclaim the hospital, previously occupied by armed bandits, involved elite forces and marked a crucial step in addressing the insecurity plaguing the Haitian capital. Otunge emphasized the Kenyan team's commitment to working closely with Haitian authorities and other international partners to restore peace and order. "There is no room for failure on our side in executing our mandate," he stated at the General Directorate of the PNH in Clercine. He undersc...

Two anti finance bill protesters found dead

Two men who went missing during anti-government protests in Mombasa have been found dead. Denis Otieno, 26, was discovered with three bullet wounds. Otieno had been missing for about 15 days, and attempts by his mother, Coleta Achieng, and uncle, George Omondi, to reach him via phone proved futile. The family learned of his death through social media. They traveled from Kitale to Mombasa, where they found his body in a morgue. “Our son was shot three times. We wonder, wasn't one bullet enough? Can't the government take action?” Omondi said in an interview with Citizen TV. The family insists that Otieno was not among the protesters and did not deserve to die. Denis had arrived in Mombasa less than a year ago after securing employment there. “I am pleading for justice. My son was murdered like a chicken. He was not part of the protesters. He was killed while going home after work,” Achieng, his mother, said. Joash Ombati's family is also in mourning after discovering his bod...

Youth Vows to hold a parallel session to that of Ruto on X

A group of Kenyan youth plans to host an X-Space conversation concurrently with President William Ruto's scheduled event. Following Ruto's announcement of his upcoming engagement on X-Space, some youths expressed that the initiative should originate from them, not the President. "Did we, the Gen Z, invite President William Ruto to X-Space, only for him to turn around and schedule his own X-Space and invite us?" one youth questioned. Ruto is set to host his inaugural X-Space Conversation with the youth of Kenya on Friday. The Cabinet members will join the President in this dialogue. “All Kenyans are welcome to contribute to this dialogue as part of our collective effort to foster national renewal and create a better Kenya for all,” a dispatch from the Cabinet Office, Executive Office of the President, stated. A statement from State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed mentioned that the President would address the concerns raised by the youth during the X-Space session,...

Senator Edwin Sifuna has rejected a proposed salary increase that would raise his pay by Sh14,000. Responding to the report on pay raises for senior state officials, Sifuna stated he does not need the increase. The salary hike was announced by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). "Let’s be clear about what we are discussing. The SRC is proposing to add 14k to my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It's still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective, I pay close to 300k in income tax every month," Sifuna said. The Nairobi Senator added, "I will not fight for an extra 14k when the whole country is saying we need to lessen the taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Let it stay." According to the new salary structure effective July 1, while the salaries of the President and his deputy will remain unchanged, the pay for the Prime Cabinet Secretary and other Cabinet Secretaries will rise to Sh990,000 from Sh957,000. He confirmed that law enforcement has records of all those who died. In one incident, Ruto explained that police had to use a live bullet after a man overpowered an officer in Ngong and hijacked their firearm. The man then used the gun against innocent citizens, forcing police to shoot him to prevent further harm. "I cannot confirm if this is the man who fired several bullets at a 12-year-old boy, but investigations are ongoing. I assure the mother of the young victim that, as president, I will ensure she gets an explanation of wh...
